Common Running Injuries #2
Inner Shin Pain? It Might Be Shin Splints
If you enjoy jogging or long-distance running, you may have experienced a dull ache along the inner or back side of your shin. This condition, commonly known as shin splints, is medically referred to as medial tibial stress syndrome.
Symptoms
- Pain about 15cm above the ankle, on the inner or back part of the shin
- Dull, throbbing discomfort during or after running
- If left untreated, may lead to stress fractures
Common Causes
- Sudden increase in running volume or intensity
- Overtraining beyond your muscle capacity
- Poor running form, flat feet, or ill-fitting shoes
- Restarting intense activity after a long break
What You Can Do
- If painful, temporarily stop running and rest the leg
- If not painful, light training may continue
- Cross-training options like cycling or pool running can help maintain fitness
- Seeing a physiotherapist for assessment and guided rehab is key to full recovery and preventing recurrence
Pro Tip: When to Replace Your Running Shoes
Even the most expensive shoes lose cushioning after 600–1000 km. Worn-out shoes are a major cause of shin splints. Keep track of your mileage and replace shoes regularly.
