Why Jaw Clenching Stiffens Your Neck (With Fixes)

Jaw clenching is not just a jaw problem—it significantly affects the neck.
This guide explains why neck stiffness happens and introduces simple physiotherapy-based exercises you can do at home.

🔹 Why Jaw Clenching Affects the Neck

The jaw and neck are directly connected through muscular and neurological pathways:

  • Masseter & Temporalis tighten and pull the head forward.
  • Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) compensates and becomes overactive.
  • Upper trapezius becomes stiff from load transfer.
  • Nervous system tension increases sensitivity in both regions.

🔹 Symptoms You May Notice

  • Neck stiffness first thing in the morning
  • Tension headaches
  • Shoulder heaviness
  • Jaw tightness or clicking

🔹 Home Exercises to Reduce Neck Stiffness

1. Suboccipital Release (1 minute)

  • Place two fingers under the skull.
  • Gently lift upward for a light stretch.
  • Breathe slowly through your nose.

2. SCM Stretch (30 seconds each)

  • Turn your head slightly to one side.
  • Tilt your head back gently.
  • Hold without forcing.

3. Jaw-Nose Breathing Reset (10 breaths)

  • Lightly rest your tongue on the palate.
  • Inhale slowly through your nose.
  • Exhale fully and keep the jaw relaxed.

🔹 When to Seek Physiotherapy

If symptoms persist longer than 2–3 weeks, you may have:

  • TMJ dysfunction
  • Cervical joint stiffness
  • Muscle imbalance from long-term clenching

Professional assessment can identify the root cause and prevent chronic progression.
