Injections for Jaw Pain

Research has found that oral splint with one of 3 injections help.

1 bethamethasone injection
2 sodium hyaluronate injection
3 plasma-rich platelet (PRP) injeciton

A study from Spain/Portugal found that they are all effective for jaw pain but to variable degrees.

Bethamethasone injection and sodium hyaluronate injection were helpful in the immediate relief of pain unto 3-4 months.

Plasma-rich platelet injection was the most helpful for 6 months onwards of all injections compared.

From Physio stand point, injections are all to be avoided if possible and rehabilitation should be attempted if all things sinister have been cleared.

Thant is because we believe none of the injections address the reason “WHY” the jaw became painful and be persistent for 6 months in the first place.

That is where physio-led assessment and rehabilitation tailored to each individual can and will enable the treatment to focus on the cause = “WHY” part of the problem to do with the jaw pain.

They may be the posture – 50% of the jaw is formed by temporal bone which is part of skull which forms the position of the head.
It may be a referred pain from neck and migraine.
It may also be from the way you breathe – where is your tongue located usually? Are you a mouth breather or nose breather during the day?
Are you clenching and grinding during the day and the night?
Any issues with reflux?

Answers the questions above can help figure out where to direct your attention to resolve the persistent jaw pain.

Happy Rehab!

Cheers!
