Jaw Clicking Sounds Explained: Causes & Easy Self-Fixes

Overview

If your jaw makes a clicking, popping, or cracking sound when you open your mouth, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common early signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) imbalance. The good news: many cases can be improved with simple self-mobilisation and posture correction.

Main Causes of Jaw Clicking

  • Disc displacement — The small fibro-cartilage disc (shock absorber and joint lubricant distributer) in the TMJ shifts forward.
  • Muscle imbalance — Tight masseter and lateral pterygoid muscles pull the jaw out of alignment.
  • Poor posture — Forward head position alters jaw mechanics.
  • Clenching or grinding — Excess load around the joint irritates the disc.

Self-Check: What Type of Clicking Do You Have?

1. Early-click pattern

Click occurs as soon as you start opening.
→ Often due to anterior disc displacement.

2. Late-click pattern

Click occurs just before your mouth fully opens.
→ Often due to jaw deviation or muscle imbalance.

Simple Self-Fix Exercises

1. Jaw Disc Repositioning Exercise (1 minute)

  1. Place your tongue lightly on the roof of your mouth (N-pose).
  2. Slowly open your mouth while keeping the tongue in place.
  3. Perform 10 slow repetitions.

2. TMJ Decompression Mobilisation (1 minute)

  1. Place two fingers under the jaw angle.
  2. Apply gentle upward pressure while slowly opening the mouth.
  3. Repeat 10 times.

3. Lateral Pterygoid Relaxation

  1. Place one finger inside the cheek along the upper molars.
  2. Apply gentle inward pressure and breathe slowly.
  3. Hold 10–15 seconds × 3.

When to See a Physiotherapist

  • Clicking becomes painful
  • Jaw locks open or closed
  • Headaches or ear pressure accompany the click
  • Symptoms persist for more than 3–4 weeks
