Tongue Posture Reset to Reduce Jaw Tension

Your tongue position dramatically influences jaw tension, breathing, and even neck pain.
This week’s guide explains the ideal tongue posture and how to train it with simple physiotherapy-based exercises.

🔹 Why Tongue Posture Matters

  • The tongue stabilises the jaw and supports the TMJ.
  • Incorrect tongue posture increases clenching and grinding.
  • Poor posture forces the jaw downward or backward, stressing the joint.
  • Proper tongue placement improves nasal breathing and reduces tension.

🔹 Signs of Poor Tongue Posture

  • Teeth marks on the sides of the tongue
  • Jaw fatigue or morning tightness
  • Neck or shoulder tension
  • Mouth breathing during the day or night

🔹 The Correct Tongue Position (3-Point Contact)

The tongue should rest in three key areas:

  • Front: Tip of the tongue on the spot just behind the upper front teeth
  • Middle: Tongue gently suctioned to the palate
  • Back: Back of the tongue lifted without force

This position keeps the jaw relaxed and prevents unconscious clenching.

🔹 Tongue Posture Training Exercises

1. Tongue Suction Hold (10–15 seconds × 5)

  • Press the entire tongue against the palate.
  • Hold gently without activating the jaw.
  • Breathe through your nose.

2. Nasal Breathing Reset (10 slow breaths)

  • Keep tongue in 3-point contact.
  • Inhale through the nose, low and quiet.
  • Exhale gently without dropping the tongue.

3. Jaw Relaxation Check (throughout the day)

  • Teeth apart
  • Lips together
  • Tongue on the palate

🔹 When to Seek Help

If maintaining tongue posture feels difficult or painful, it may indicate:

  • TMJ joint restriction
  • Overactive jaw muscles
  • Nasal airway limitations

A physiotherapy assessment can identify the root cause and guide corrective treatment.
