Introduction
Jaw misalignment can cause clenching, headaches, neck tension, and shoulder tightness. In this article, you will learn a simple 2-minute self-check used in physiotherapy to quickly assess your jaw alignment at home.
Test 1: Side-to-Side Symmetry
Feel both TMJs with your fingers
Place your fingers over the joints just in front of your ears. Slowly open and close your mouth. If one side moves earlier or more than the other, it may indicate muscle tightness or joint restriction.
Test 2: Jaw Opening Path
Check for deviation when opening
In front of a mirror, slowly open your mouth. If your jaw shifts to one side, wobbles, or curves, it suggests imbalance in joint mechanics or muscle tone.
Test 3: Muscle Tightness
Palpate key chewing muscles
Gently press your temples, the masseter area, and the inside border of your jaw. If one side feels tighter or more tender, it may reflect chewing dominance or clenching habits.
Corrective Exercises
1. Slow Straight Opening
2. Tongue Resting Position
3. Inner-Cheek Release
Conclusion
This 2-minute self-assessment helps you identify early signs of jaw imbalance. If your symptoms persist, professional assessment is recommended.
